From August of 2010 Emirates airlines will provide a direct Daily flight from Madrid to their hub in Dubai providing onward connections throughout their worldwide network.

Particularly useful will be the connections to flights to Asia, Australia and New Zealand as flights are timed to coincide with departures to these regions. This offers travellers a saving of around 6 hours compared with present journey times through major European airports such as Heathrow and Frankfurt.

Flights will initially be operated by Airbus A330 aircraft.

On a wet and cold Saturday morning in January each year one can visit the “IFEMA” exhibition and conference center in Madrid and wash away those winter blues. FITUR is a 30 year old, week long, annual exhibition and trade conference for the travel industry with the doors thrown open on the weekends to the general public.

Whilst originally a strictly “industry professionals only” affair the weekends now see the exhibitors catering to the public with free gifts, exhibitions and special travel offers valid only for the duration of FITUR. For those living in Madrid the opportunity to have exotic locations such as the Maldives and Thailand explained by natives of those countries offers new horizons when planning the annual vacation. Once very much a Spain only exhibition nowadays over 100 countries send representatives with everything from Morrocan wood carvers to Pacific Island dancers to keep visitors amussed!

If you are interested in visiting FITUR 2011 then bear in mind the following:

    • Open to the public only on sat and sunday.
    • Cost was 8€ per person in 2010
    • Normally held in the 3rd week of January each year
    • Be prepared to walk… over 600 stands to visit!!
    • Fitur provides disabled and child friendly access and facilities

    Calle Goya, Madrid

No one is really sure whether La casa del Abuelo in Calle Goya (close to Metro Goya) is better as a restaurant or as a tapas bar. The truth is that it caters for both and as such has developed an enviable reputation as the place to go for grilled Garlic shrimps in Madrid!

Well Shrimps and many other examples of traditional Spanish cooking!

If you’re allergic to seafood don’t worry as La casa del abuelo, the house of the grandfather, offers an extensive range of meat and vegetable dishes alongside the traditional Spanish “Jamon” and Chorizo.

So, if you are shopping the fashionable “Serrano” area or simply walking Madrid after having been in Retiro park one can enjoy a tasty snack or a full sit down meal in the middle of the city at La casa del Abuelo!
